Punta Gorda Florida (translated "Broad Point") is centrally located approximately 100 miles south of Tampa on Florida's west coast. The U.S. Census Bureau reported the Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) of Charlotte County as the fastest growing county in the United States during the 1980-90 period. The population of the Punta Gorda metropolitan area is over 133,000 in the unincorporated areas and a population of over 16,000 in the city of Punta Gorda. Charlotte County is known for its recreational opportunities. It has a total of 70 parks and recreation areas. The county has 12.5 miles of gulf coast beaches along the length of its barrier islands. There are 15 public beach access points. Beautiful gulf front Don Pedro Island State Park is accessible only by boat. There are approximately 28 marinas and 17 boat ramps located along the Peace River, Cape Haze Peninsula, Lemon Bay and Placida Harbor areas. Numerous canals wind through major residential subdivisions and provide access to the open waters of Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf of Mexico. The area is a waterfront paradise. The Charlotte Harbor Environmental Center is a 3,000 acre center with over 800 acres of coastal ecosystem bordering Alligator Creek. Visitors can see over 120 bird species, 22 mammal types, plus hundreds of amphibians and creatures in the marshes and swamps. The Charlotte Harbor Environmental Center is located on Burnt Store Rd near US41. Nature lovers, it is definitely worth a visit. Another very interesting place to visit is the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum on Sanibel Island, a fascinating and educational place displaying glorious shells. Bailey Matthews Shell Museum Cabbage Key 239-283-2278 Located across from Marker60 on the Intracoastal Waterway. It is accessible only by boat. Cabbage Key is a tiny island built on an ancient Calusa Indian mound. The Key's old house has a unique restaurant bar area where the walls are covered with dollar bills, often signed by guests. An enjoyable trip. Cabbage Key website Cayo Costa State Park 239-964-0375 Located between the northern end of Captiva Island and Boca Grande, Cayo Costa is another island accessible only by boat. Cayo Costa is one of the largest uninhabited and virtually unspoiled barrier islands in Florida. It is a great spot for fishing, camping or just relaxing. Cayo Costa State Park Oscar Scherer State Park This large park if probably one of the best places to see Florida scrub-jays. Scubjays are a threatened species found only in Florida. The scrub flatwoods provide the scrubjays with their ideal habitat. The park´s natural setting is ideal for wildlife viewing. Canoe, kayak or biking is permitted. No power boats allowed. The Punta Gorda area is an easy drive to some of the world's best beaches.Boca Grande - Located on the barrier island of Gasparilla. ABOUT THE PUNTA GORDA AREA The Punta Gorda FL MSA (Punta Gorda metropolitan statistical area) consists of Charlotte County. Charlotte County was established in 1921 from a portion of De Soto County and was named for Charlotte Harbor. Charlotte may be a name associated with the Calusa Indian group in southwest Florida at the time of early Spanish explorers. In 2006, the population of Charlotte County exceeded 154,000. Punta Gorda is the principal city in Charlotte County Florida. Punta Gorda means "broad point". Beautiful Punta Gorda has the quaint charm and rich history of a fishing village.
